Fernando Abellanas Suspends a Hidden Studio Beneath a Bridge in Valencia

Fernando Abellanas is a self-taught designer that has installed a hidden studio beneath a graffiti-covered bridge at an undisclosed location in Valencia, Spain. The concrete structure above forms the room and walls for the studio, while the concrete beams beneath the bridge deck are utilized as the runners for a set of wheels that move the studio with a hand crank.

The structure can be rolled to join a column filled with wooden shelves which serve as a workspace, a tabletop, and a plastic chair, or towards the top which serves as the entrance to the studio. There’s even a lamp for the evening time. Wooden panels on the sides of the studio hinge down or outwards to give Abellanas an unobstructed view out of the hideaway. Its design is reminiscent of a cabin, and is utilized as a retreat away from the busy city.

Abellanas spoke on the studio’s inspiration and isolation, stating:

In this case we are not referring to an idyllic hut you would find in the middle of the woods but rather to tiny spaces recovered from the city itself, where you can hide from the city’s hectic pace. These are locations that due to their architecture, location or size have become useless. People hardly notice when walking by. When we discover, analyze and inhabit these places it reminds us of the feelings of isolation, peace, and protection we experienced during childhood when hiding, during a family event, under a roundtable covered with a long tablecloth.
